If this doesn’t fix things the issue falls under the fact that you have XP and driver when it updated & installed is for vista so there may be a compatibility issue, so last resort will be reinstall

    start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager>
look for a yellow? on the audio
if there is one then the driver is missing
if you have the CD for audio card then reinstall it or if its onboard audio, place winCD back in and install from there.
Or use RadarSync as suggested as it is a fairly good program just not sure why they said not for a laptop.
    here is the instructions.

    FINDING DRIVERS

    NEED TO FIND YOUR DRIVERS?

Go http://www.radarsync.com/ this software will find them and update them for you all for free, just click on the red download button (start free download free version) 1.18 MB is the size of file just choose where you would like to save it too.

Yup, you need to install soundcard drivers.

You can use RadarSync (http://www.radarsync.com/). It's a program that searches and installs driver updates, a bit BETA, but it does the job. (Use only when you have desktop PC.)

Be sure and do all of your Windows Updates, even if you have to go to windowsupdate.com. It might find your sound card and install drivers for it.
