Question

Help answer this question below.

I have some great ideas for clothing design. I'd like to actually make some of my designs into clothes that I can wear, but there are no pre-existing patterns for me to use. How do I make my own pattern?

They do have a whole system of creating slopers (designs using muslin fabric). You study body measurements etc. I took lessons from a seamstress in this, but I don't fully understand it. You could also go to the thrift store and buy items that are close to your ideas, take them apart to copy them.

I'd study other patterns similar to the thoughts you have in your head and create some things before you jump straight into your own. It'll give you some experience.

Usaly i go threw pages of patters and look for the closest one to mine, like if i wanna make a dress with the bondage stings hanging off it i just look for a mini dress pattern or a full length strait dress and add the bondage straps.

Its helps if you draw out the garments get an idea of what type of fabric you want and where you want the seams at in the garment and then its easyer to find a patter thats simaler. And just a good idea, use the sugested fabric on the pattern just tell you lern what fabric you can work with esaly and what fabric you will be burning after 3 hours of trying to sew a button on.

And of course you can just buy pattern paper and a crayon. And draw your little heart out. But really i whould work with premade patterns i have made lots of patterns and knowing how the seams will look and how to use premade patterns is really something you need to know to make patterns. Also study where thay put the seams its obviuse you dont want it right down the middle but you get the idea i hope. Best of luck.
