  • NH has had that motto for as many years as I can remember back and yes it is serious!
  • An old friend of mine who lived in New Hampshire made a hobby out of making up variants of the state motto. His favorite being, drive fast or die. I like it, of course my state motto is Thus always to tyrants which is kind of lame.
  • Yes, it's serious. New Hampshire’s most famous General, John Stark is credited with the birth of the motto when he wrote “Live Free or Die; Death is Not the Worst of Evils.”
  • I think that the motto is more appropriate today than it has been for a long time. The people of New Hampshire continue to embrace the ideals of our forefathers, who understood that above all else, personal liberty is the key to humanity. "Live Free or Die" is akin to the more famous quote by Patrick Henry of "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death", yet no one ever questions Henry's quote. At a time when the much of the nation has dismissed liberty as a limited, and sometimes dangerous, right given to us by the government, the spirit of New Hampshire's motto is easily misunderstood by many. This nation would be better served if more embraced the ideal. When you hear our president claim that his most important job is to protect the safety and security of our country and it's people, and find that no one calls him to task for such an absurd view of his role, you know the nation is in trouble. The presidents most important job is to ensure the integrity and strength of the Constitution that acknowledges our natural right of liberty and freedom. Military might does not give liberty. You're born with it.
  • Oh they mean it and are very proud of it indeed. I spent High School and College there and we were taught that motto and to be proud of it.
