My 1997 Ford Escort tries to turn over when I start it, but it sounds a lot like a car that isn't getting air, fuel, or a spark.

You're reading How to verify if my engine has a cracked block. What is the easiest way to do this?

Or just a "Blown Head Gasket". Pressurizing each cylinder with a "Leak Down Tester" should tell U a great deal about Ur engines condition. A "Cylinder Balance Test" will as well. Are U losing "Water"/"Oil in Water"/"Water in Oil"??? All are good indicators, but NOT Positive Proof!!! I say that, having a v-6 Ford on my engine stand right now that just "Overheated" & lost "Water" through a rusted rear "Expansion / Freeze Plug" that was covered by the transmission. Three (3) shops said "Cracked Block"!!! No "Water in Oil/Oil in Water", "Leak Down Test" showed Good Cylinders. Pressurizing Cooling System showed loss of Pressure even though we couldn't see "Water" anywhere. $30.00 parts fix, but I had to pull engine out to do it as "Block Sealer" wouldn't get it. Good Luck!
