Not a bad idea Aris. I think we should have a special Notice board for congratulations and NO points at all.
That way we would know that they were genuine and not point grabbers
Lyn and I did suggest this in November 2007 on the Blog but nothing happened.
I like the idea, but being a Web developer and realizing how much resources are required for each seemingly small "patch" it's pretty low on my priority list.
I was a member of a different site for a year or more, they decided to abolish the ratings in the religious areas because of all the negativity and chaos those subjects always seemed to have.Maybe here they can make an area like you are asking about, one where the congrats and whatnot can be unrated.
I like the idea!(had to give you a +3 though,,it IS a good comment/question..etc)
In congratulatory questions it shuld be the person being congratulated that should receive the points and not the member postion the question.
In the end what happens is that the member posting the congratualatory questions keeps notching up the points while the congratualated member is left posting thanks to the tens of members who posted answers.
Your suggestion is certainly be a welcome change from the current state of affairs.
After much consideration I like it. Apparently no one likes me enough to give me any points so for me having the option to not get any will take the sting out of the inevitable. Nicely done with this question!!
I'm in.
Good Evening Arisztid..Mishto hom me Dikava tute!! I don't really have alot of points, I see the leader board and people get in a week what I have so far. I don't really care for the points, It no thing for me. I do however like the Neg.ratings.. I seem to get them for , ok.."sarcastic" questions, which I find rather humorous...They are always anonymous and with no explanation. I do not know why but it always puts a smile on my face. I seem to get along with most people who have different views than myself..and I wish that they would engage me..but no, just leave the - and drive on...haha!!
I like your idea, so long as they could still down rate me...here I'll do this..I will not give you any points for the occasional congratulatory question,,but here is 5 (I think) for this one....
I like that idea my friend. I often ask for "no points please" when I am addressing a question from a different angle and therefore not really being responsive to it. But no one ever pays any attention. I get points anyway and it's very sweet of people to do that but at the same time it is kinda frustrating. So I vote thumbs up on your idea! Happy Saturday! :) ((hugs))
due to my need for sleep...i concur!
I like it. I would also like that to be for all questions as well as answers. We should have the options if we want to be rated or not.
It only draws more attention to the points system. Since points are not any true measure of anything other than E-preciation, I say simply ignore the numbers.
Great idea! I wonder what would happen if they had a leader board for points given :0)
A good point, that congratulatories shouldn't be point getters. That's just using the other persons input to get points for yourself. But, probably, most people wouldn't use it anyhow.
Excellent idea!
I hope the people who always say that the "points don't matter" would check that option for all of their questions and answers ;)
I think that the existing "please don't rate this question" or "please no points" is a good workaround to avoid the work of coding this feature.
I have not seen it very often lately, though.
I agree totally Aris! This should especially happen when you "host" someone's promotion to another level. I would hope none of us do that for the points!!!
Lets just make all congratulatory questions and answers "not ratable".
YOU read my old suggestions! LOL - http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2843351
Great idea....I would used it on anything that was my opinion....everyone's opinion is worth the same to me. IMO all opinions should be valued the same....I would only allow points on my educational answers.
Congratulations! I didn't give you any points for this question.
If Answerbag started charging a $ 2 a month fee, will you still join?

Which features do you wish Answerbag would copy from other sites? Which features do you hope they never do? To either or both, why?

When we ask or answer questions on here, should there be another field we fill out? Perhaps what "tone" the question or answer is?

Is the window that pops up showing recent activity on a person enough for you? Or do you always click again to go to their full profile?

You're reading (fantasizing here) I would like an option for each user to check to not get points for a question or answer if they so desire. I would use it for my rare congratulatory questions and in other cases. What is your opinion of this?
Comments
I would really like that but I doubt it shall happen.

Me either. They were also going to do something about the mod points but did not bother.
by Firebrand on January 16th, 2009
What were they supposed to do with the mod points?
by Arisztid on January 16th, 2009
Get rid of them or drop them to one point, maybe two. It was not decided there was a lot of talk about it at the time. I was quite happy to give up all mine but some people thought I was getting at them because I thought it would be a good idea. They did not take into account that I had more Mod points than most people put together. They just thought I was trying to stop them getting them, Later the person who was really nasty to me about it added Get rid of all mod points to their name." There is now't as strange as folk"
by Firebrand on January 16th, 2009
I avoid flagging now because I do not want to be seen as a mod point seeker. If I can, I report profiles via feedback now and only flag the bad stuff. I did not want to fall to the flack I saw others getting. I have enough bullcrap in my life.
.
I think dropping them to one point would be good but, if none, people would stop flagging.

I moderate categories but nowhere near as much as I used to because now there are so many categories I am lost. I never do Nonsense or Duplicate just wrong categories as i go through. but i do not care if they take the points away. I really do not care much about the site at all now. It is a fake. Half the people have changed their names and you have no idea who you are talking to.I do not like that. It is as if they have a club and you have to become somebody else to belong That s my bitch for now i have to get my laundry out and go to the newsagent :)
by Firebrand on January 16th, 2009
I have the same problem... I do not know who half of the people are now. I never fit in with any club. I may be a COAT but that is as close to a club as I am in. I never fit with the cliques.
.
Go have fun, if fun can be had, with the laundry and news.

About the notice board: then we would get questions like:
Have you checked the notice board? My friend 'friends name' just made Sage!!! Come congratulate him???
by ChandaDiane - est. 1975 on January 17th, 2009
That is a point Chandra but it was just a suggestion to try to cut down on the Congratulation problem which was taking over at the time. I am sure there are other ways, they could have a banner across the top of home page saying " Have you checked whose special day it is today" There must be many ways.
..
They did that when BAM made Maestro. I am sure something could be done .That was over a year ago anyway , nothing is liable to happen now.
by Firebrand on January 17th, 2009
Oh it was a huge problem for a time. I remember the glut of these questions. There were a few people who must have been watching the level up section like hawks (is there actually somewhere that tells when someone levels up?) and congratulating people not even on their friend's lists.
.
Personally, I would prefer to NOT be congratulated by someone who is not a friend of mine. Actually, I would prefer to not be congratulated at all... it makes me feel a bit wonky. I also think that it should not be done for under level 50 and only every 10 after that.
by Arisztid on January 17th, 2009
I agree Arisztid. Not that I don't appreciate The congrats I have gotten before, but I hope I don't get anymore. It's nice and all, but I don't care about the points and I would be happy if I stayed Maestro for the remainder of my AB career.
Yes, perhaps a little ticker up top that announces who has achieved a noteworthy level (I can agree with 50+) That way if someone wants to positroll the actual person who deserves it they can. :)
by ChandaDiane - est. 1975 on January 17th, 2009
I really stopped caring about leveling up when I was able to give a +6.... that was kind of my goal. If I stayed here for the rest of my AB "career" I could not care less. Now I do like it when people tell me that they like my answers and questions either by points or comments, but, if given an option between the two (you can only pick one), I would choose comments over points.
.
To me the only real purpose the points serve is to move good answers up to the top where they are seen more readily. I think that this is a good thing but as far as leveling up, I do not care.
.
I also am a random positroll. I routinely pick someone for various reasons to positroll, such as they have been DRed or are having a bad day. I also positroll questions when I see a thread troll has been visiting.
