In an inline engine (cylinders in a row) they are numbered beginning with the number 1 cylinder at the front of the engine and the last number at the rear. On a V8 it is odd numbered cylinders on 1 side (1357) and even on the other (2468) The numbers on most cylinders are stamped somewhere near the cylinder, like on the intake manifold.
