Hi, Thats a good question. If your not going to have penetrative sex you can leave it in.
If you are going to have penetrative sex you'll have to take it out.
Some guys may think it isn't the best thing, but unless your getting naked in front of him he won't know your having your period.
But other guys like myself wouldn't be worried or put off in any way what so ever.

If you're going to have fingers, a penis or anything else inserted into your vagina, you should take-out the tampon first. Otherwise just leave it in place. Be advised he very well may see the string! Have fun!

Obviously you cannot have sex as you could seriously hurt yourself and he will definatly be able to feel that. But it he found out that you lied/tricked him he will be not only grossed out but also insulted. This could start a long line of him not trusting you and it will be a constant thing he thinks about during all future sexually activity. I would just tell him and go from there.
