  • I have not, but I have seen the ads many times. Here is what I believe about most of these products. To begin with, just about every damn thing you see advertised can be done for FREE, if a person looks. Do most look? Nope. Perfect example, cruise the Walmart software section. Top shelf, $10 CDs for firewalls, spyware, anti-virus, whatever. I GUARANTEE you, no question, every single thing up there can be found for free on the web. Maybe not that same title, but something that does exactly the same thing. But people would rather shell out $10 than spend 10 minutes looking. I have found DVD rippers (zilla rip'n'burn is FREE), audio rippers, firewalls (zone alarm is FREE), CD burning software (LOTS of free available), the list can go on forever. I don't mean free trial, I mean 100% free. When it comes to software that says "speeds up your computer up to 20x!!!!!!" (they always include 15 extra exclamation points for some reason), there are also disclaimers. It is not guaranteed. So what do these do? Mostly tweak your network settings. All of that can be done in your registry. Don't know where to look? Search the web for registry tweaks, optimizing your network, Windows tricks, anything you can think of about speeding up your internet connection. You will find some. Are they are a scam? No. Just like any other advertising you see on TV, like the old Don Lapre tiny classified ads, it's not a scam... all they are doing is selling you some research that you can do yourself, but most people are too lazy, so these guys profit from it. It's like software that says it can speed up your internet connection. Ok, how exactly? Let's say you are using dial up. Software is not going to make that modem send faster, maybe compress it more, but it won't turn that 56K into a 100K. You can only squeeze so much speed out of anything. So what do they do? Tweak your settings. It's mostly in the registry. You just have to know where to go and what to change. Again, search online for anything to speed up your connection or network tweaking. Just like those $10 CDs, they are figuring most people will say they don't have time to look for a free alternative, don't know what to look for, or screw it... only $10, no big deal. I'll save the money and get it for free.
  • I haven't mostly for the reasons stated by aaron. I do have a neighbor that paid the fee only to be highly disappointed by the service. She eventually got the charge removed from her credit card but it was a difficult process. I spent about 4 hours cleaning up her machine and installing tweaks and tools and increased her speed by 50%. All absolutely 100% FREE! Youtube has tons of stuff that can help. I also like these sites for tweaks and tips. http://lifehacker.com/ http://www.pchell.com/
