Is there any way to prevent Internet Explorer from launching unless requested by a specific program? I want iexplore.exe to remain locked until a program with my permission wants to open it.

Since no one's answered this, I'll take a crack.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall on my pc. It allows users three choices on internet access for specific programs: Allow, Ask, and Block. In your case, for example, you'd set IE's permission level to "Ask" and every time IE tried to access the web, Sygate would ask if that was cool. If you answered "No", Sygate would block IE from the internet. You could then open that other program and when Sygate queried you about access, you'd say "Yes". I've locked Windows Explorer off from internet access using that same method for the past five years, BTW.

Although I'm not sure how other firewalls work, most probably have a similar function. If not, let me know and I'll try to find a copy of the last freeware version of Sygate.

- Yeah, I agree with you. IE is so deeply integrated into Windows, it would be near impossible to control it from within. So this firewall solution is probably the easiest to set up and use.

I thought IEXPLORE.EXE was spyware or a virus. Your taskmanager should show explorer.exe running when you're using IE, not IEXPLORE.EXE

- Ever since Windows ME, Internet Explorer has been iexplorer.exe. Actually, I think it has been since Windows 98. Explorer.exe is the Windows Shell. It's the GUI that you look at when you are using Windows. Explorer.exe in addition to Taskmgr.exe(which is the Start Bar). iexplorer.exe has never been any kind of Virus or Spyware, unless your system was infected by a virus and that virus decided to hide in that particular file. Do the research before posting false answers.
