Is there any way to prevent Internet Explorer from launching unless requested by a specific program? I want iexplore.exe to remain locked until a program with my permission wants to open it.

    Since no one's answered this, I'll take a crack.

    I use Sygate Personal Firewall on my pc. It allows users three choices on internet access for specific programs: Allow, Ask, and Block. In your case, for example, you'd set IE's permission level to "Ask" and every time IE tried to access the web, Sygate would ask if that was cool. If you answered "No", Sygate would block IE from the internet. You could then open that other program and when Sygate queried you about access, you'd say "Yes". I've locked Windows Explorer off from internet access using that same method for the past five years, BTW.

    Although I'm not sure how other firewalls work, most probably have a similar function. If not, let me know and I'll try to find a copy of the last freeware version of Sygate.

    I thought IEXPLORE.EXE was spyware or a virus. Your taskmanager should show explorer.exe running when you're using IE, not IEXPLORE.EXE
