Hmm... tough call. It depends on the fighter. Boxers are trained to take a hell of a lot of punishment and deliver a lot of force in a punch. Most martial arts attacks cannot match the pure striking power of a boxer's punch (TKD kicks comes closest) but make up for it by having a broader menu of options (elbows, knees, feet).

I think that the best hope for the martial artist would be for him to be skilled in a takedown style, like Gracie Ju-jitsu, and beat the boxer on the ground. Trying to match blows, with feet, hands, or other body parts, with an experienced boxer is asking for trouble and to lose.

BTW, boxing IS a martial art, along with Greco-Roman wrestling. Many folks don't consider them to be arts since they are also professional sports.

In the "real" world combat does not follow rules, so it is impossible to say. Much would depend on a the circumstances, strength and size of the combatants.

... in a BOXING match, following boxing rules, the boxer would win, possibly in the first round ...

... in a judo match, where punching is NOT allowed, the boxer would be tossed for points and would loose ...

... in a TKD, full contact karate, or muay thai match, it would be a close call, but there would be a slight advantage to the martial artist because they would be trained to use more than just punches and a boxer without tape and gloves will have difficulty even punching ...

... in a NO RULES duel to the death between a boxer and a combat warrior martial artist (a real fight) the boxer would die in just a few seconds ...

A really good boxer is hard to beat. It's a very effective striking art. I guess it's a matter of who could most effectively pit their strength against the opponent's weakness.

martial arts isnt just about fighting its about self discipline aswell. it learns you how to defend yourself in difficult situations so if that event did occur a martial arts expert probably would be able to defend himself/herself without getting beaten to a pulp. anyway professional boxers can not fight out in the street because they wouldnt ever be able to fight in the ring again
