Question

Help answer this question below.

I have a 1997 f-150 4x4 v8. When i hit the breaks, its very slow to stop. I have new rotors and brake pads on the truck. I was told something about the brake booster, but was then told that since the pedal isn't hard, that it isn't that. Any ideas?

New pads and new rotors have to “wear in” before they work very well.  Until they do, they will produce considerably less friction than normal.

Did this start before or after you had the brake work done? Did they break the system open in any way aside from removing the master cylinder cap? ie. Did you have the master cylinder, calipers, wheel cylinders or brake hoses or lines replaced?

If so, there is a good possibility that the brake system wasn't properly bled to remove air from the lines. Ford trucks can be notoriously difficult to get all of the air out of.

    Also:

Make sure the master cylinder is full of brake fluid.

If you hear a "swooshing" sound when you hit the brakes, it probably IS the brake booster.

Otherwise, you need to go through the entire brake system and look for evidence of small leaks, including checking the calipers and wheel cylinders for failure.
