    The Indian Parliament changed it because that there are two local languages spoken in the area,Gujarati & Marathi and although the rest of the world knows it as Bombay it has always be known by the locals as Mumbai The new name has something to do with a Goddess called 'Mumba Devi',so it looks like the name is an abbreviation of the two words.

    Who cares, but I believe the name Bombay was given by British, but the original name is Mumbai which is restored before 10 years. Other, it was changed to confuse the terrorists, but they found it out anyway, lol
