First of all, if you break your PS2, don't try to hold me responsible. So, if you have butter fingers, get some help (someone who is good with electronics.) I've done it a couple of times, if you don't have two left hands and you are carefull it isn't hard at all.
Second of all, the PS2 comes with a limited manufactures warranty. I think it's three months. I could be wrong. Check for yourself. IF IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY SEND IT BACK FOR REPAIR. Some places offer extended warranties, if you have an extended warranty, send it back for repair.
Now, if it's not under warranty, then you're on your own. You have a broken/dirty ps2 and need to fix it. You will need the following things:
-phillips screwdriver
-phillips screwdriver with a very small tip
-q tips
-rubbing alchohol
-electronic dusting spray (canned air)
1) Completely unplug your ps2 (remove all cords, and memcards) and place it on a clean/dry worksurface.
2) Flip the ps2 over on it's top.
3) Gently remove every square screw cover (including the square rubber "feet".) Do this by prying with your fingernail (if you don't have a finger nail, be creative.) My ps2 has 10 total screw covers, yours probably does too.
4) Remove the screws with your phillips screwdriver. (To remove screws... turn screws counter-clockwise duh.)
5) Flip your ps2 over.
6) Find and remove black warranty sticker. Will say "void" after it's peeled off.
7) Gently pull top off. There is a fragile cable that runs from the eject button to the hardware on the ps2. Be careful not to damage that when removing the "lid."
By looking at the front of the ps2, lift on the back/top and pull towards you. After the screws come out the top comes off very easily. DO NOT FORCE THE TOP OFF
8) Now you should be looking at the guts of your ps2. Take your smaller screwdriver and remove the 4 tiny screws from the top of your dvd tray. (that's the large black "box" that is on the right side of your playstation.)
9) You should be able to see the DVD eye. Now you can start cleaning. First, dust the insides of the playstation over with the canned air. DON'T SHAKE THE CANNED AIR!
10) Dip one end of the q tip into the alcohol. Gently swab the lens with the wet end of the q tip. Spray a couple of bursts of air from the can to dry it a bit.
11) Put your playstation back together again.
12) Pray
