• I followed that link and I must admit that I don't have an answer for you off the top of my head. I banged on Vista just long enough to run into enough problems to make me revert to WinXP so I am not *intimately* familiar with Vista, at least not on that level.

  That said, if I read your complaint right then it appears that your issue the same as WinXP "Lock the Taskbar", a command available simply by right-clicking on a blank spot of the Taskbar.
  Your AV and IM software would not affect it, though a piece of malware that slipped through might affect your preferences. More likely is a clumsy mouse-click; I've done it to myself a couple of times.

• We have tried running the thing with NO AV at all, just not surfing anywhere but here to see if it happens... it does. According to the scans we have no virus or malware. This problem is all over the place on the net, people hollering about it. This computer is as "clean" as can be because Keysha has spent hours and hours on it.

  What happens is the explorer bar task bar locks up with, when you hover over it, an hourglass. When you move your mouse back to the screen you can operate whatever is up there properly.

  The only way to get your bar working is to kill explorer via task manager and reopen it with the open file thing. Once it happens it happens more and more frequently until you reboot. You are free from it for a bit... then repeat process.

  People are saying that it is related to a Vista update.

• Oh, THAT sort of lock-up.
  I've had similarly annoying/serious lockups after certain WinXP updates from Microsoft. I would look at the update history and uninstall the one closest to when the problem started to see if that solves the problem. If not, reinstall and repeat with another update until you find the culprit. Trial-and-error sucks but sometimes it's the only way. Sometimes there is a release note on an update that might tell you that it's a common bug, but that isn't always true.
  Once you find out what it is, there is a way to tell MS not to ever try that update again.

• Keysha tried that... checking most recent update, uninstalling it and reinstalling it. Nothing works.

  She just found something we have not tried before. I guess we shall see if it works.

  I cannot imagine someone who works from their computer being able to function with this. It makes normal surfing and computer use like mine VERY frustrating. I can only imagine what it is like for someone who is multitasking for work.

• It's not always THE most recent update that does it. It just happened to be in my case; I got lucky.
  Sometimes it is something more... esoteric though. Such are the problems of trying to troubleshoot remotely without hands-on access to a box.

• There are more theories going about this thing because of the havoc it is raising and we are trying everything. Keysha said that some people reported it happening in XP and she tried an XP fix.
