Spelling

Question:

I rather dislike these americanised spellcheckers. I used to know how to spell words and it makes me quite unsure of spellings. Does anyone else have this issue?

Yes American English is so constricting. It doesn't like Brasil, and Brasil doesn't like Brazil.
It doesn't like Americanised, but accept ZZZs all the time.
Rubbish I say.
I think we all ought to set ours to NZ English or Aussie English and really have some fun.

you are correct about not being understood most of the time as Aus has so many colloquial phrases that make no sense here.
English spellcheckers are a pain in the butt.
It is fine if you really spell a word incorrectly.
But if a word is spelled correct, but used incorrect, spell check doesn't help at all.

Australian english hasn't changed any original spellings, it has just made additions to the language, which, I seriously doubt anyone would consider to need to be correct in a spellchecker, of all things..

I agree with the use of the word comments. I have to be careful all the time. My 'in' and 'it' get mixed up and so do the 'of' and 'on'. LOL

I set mine to British English, as they should be. If there's no such option, I usually just ignore it.

Hell, I usually ignore it anyway, and I tend to get away with it.

Yeah, it's just a little odd. Like in Word, I'll set it to apparently 'AU english' and it will still show up with words like 'colour' being incorrect.
Avatar hetalivo Jan, 12 2009 at 11:43 AM
Hm. That's odd. I just set mine to English (Australian) right now as a test, and it sees 'colour' as correct and 'color' as incorrect. Perhaps you're setting it incorrectly, or maybe you set it once but it reverts back to American when you close the program?

Perhaps that is the case. I shall check.

Spellcheckers cannot be trusted whether they're american or english! Here's yet another longer version of one of my favourite examples!...
I have a spelling checker.
It came with my pea sea.
It plane lee marks four my revue
Miss steaks aye can knot sea.

Eye ran this poem threw it,
Your sure reel glad two no.
Its vary polished in it's weigh.
My checker tolled me sew.

A checker is a bless sing,
It freeze yew lodes of thyme.
It helps me right awl stiles two reed,
And aides me when I rime.

Each frays come posed up on my screen
eye trussed too bee a joule.
The checker pours o'er every word
To cheque sum spelling rule.

Bee fore a veiling checker's Hour
spelling mite decline,
And if we're lacks oar have a laps,
We wood bee maid too wine.

Butt now bee cause my spelling
Is checked with such grate flair,
Their are no fault's with in my cite,
Of nun eye am a ware.

Now spelling does knot phase me,
It does knot bring a tier.
My pay purrs awl due glad den
With wrapped word's fare as hear.

To rite with care is quite a feet
Of witch won should be proud,
And wee mussed dew the best wee can,
Sew flaw's are knot aloud.

Sow ewe can sea why aye dew prays,
Such soft wear four pea seas,
And why eye brake in two averse

A little. I disagree with a bank draught being called a 'check' when if we used 'cheque' like we used to there would be no confusion. For that matter, 'draught' would avoid confusion with 'draft.' But some spelling seem all right. 'Color' instead of 'colour' doesn't present a potential confusion.

I sometimes us the English spellings of words like behaviour, etc. But since I am USA I use the spellchecker to correct my bad spelling and keyboard errors. Nothing says you have to change the word!!!
