You are correct to doubt. The use of acronyms originated in the military in WW1 and only spread to civilian use during WW2. Any acronym allegedly originating before WW2 is almost certainly a fabrication.

Interesting. Didn't know that...but I certainly am NOT surprised that acronyms were invented by the military. I've seen acronyms within acronyms. (I'm ex military) thnx Alec.;-)
