You're reading Have you ever heard of this 'old wives tale'? It is said that boxers who were desperate to make their weight-limit would try to (appear to) lose the last few ounces by standing upside-down in the dressing-room, just before the weigh-in.

Well, that would seem to be the obvious answer but, as a physicist, I am not so sure. I know that it looks like the old 'Physics-101' trick question about the weight of a working hourglass, but I have theoretical and (mechanical model)experimental evidence which suggests that it is not really as crazy as it sounds. For the purposes of a book-in-progress, I was hoping to hear from someone who had actually tried it. I am also just about to pose a similar counter-intuitive question elsewhere in this forum.
