If you would just like to make the background of a image transparent you can use a special function located in the "Help" menu.

    1. Go to Help
    2. Go to Export Transparent Image
    3. Follow the steps (*hint* use the magic wand to select the area you want to make transparent)

This will create a transparent gif for you.

ALSO you can use the Extract feature to remove a background.

    1. Go to FIlter
    2. Choose Extract (or hit ctrl+alt+x)
    3. First outline your item with the marker, then use the paint bucket to cover the area you DON'T want to extract.
    4. When you're done, hit OK

If the background is complex (say, an outdoor landscape), then it might leave some stray pieces of the background. Just go in with your eraser tool to clean these up.

    For the entire image:
Select the layer containing the image and adjust the opacity. You'll find the opacity slider at the top of the Layers pallette.

    If you want partial transparency:
Use a mask- this allows you to "erase" portions of an image without destroying it. Look at the bottom of the Layers pallette for the icon (2nd from left) that looks like a circle inside a rectangle. Click it and you'll see an addition to the layer- this is the mask area.

You can use brushes and varied opacity to "paint" the mask. The color pallette will only allow you Grayscale since you are only using it to adjust opacity and not color.

You can get really creative with this mask tool and create some really stunning composites.

Press F7 to show the layers palette. Then on the very top of the small windows will be: Opacity and Fill. Click on the Fill level and decrease it.
