  • It sounds like a ground loop problem and what you have are called 'hum bars'. In other words, something isn't properly grounded and it's most likely the cable rather than your TV. You can try ferrite beads or an isolation transformer to solve this, or use a power strip/surge protector that has inbuilt coax protection - these cost around 15$ from your local hardware store, Kmart or whatever (if you're in the US). It may also be a good idea to contact the cable company and make sure that the ground loop isn't happening outside or where the cable actually enters the house.
  • it sounds line hum bars you can change the tv input to a coax input to tell if it is in the tv or in the cable box try to bypass the box
  • The other answers are essentially correct though they don't really help much to resolve the issue.. I experienced the same problem and eventually solved it relatively easily once I understood it. Either the shield in your coax is improperly grounded or the ground powering the TV is imbalanced. In either case the imbalanced ground coming from the coax or power supplied from the wall socket are acting as an antenna. To trouble shoot this, start by unplugging the TV. Attach one of those plug adapters that reduces a three pronged plug to a two pronged plug. This will remove the ground. Plug the TV back in and turn it on. If the lines are gone, the ground loop is in the power line. If they are still there, the ground loop is in your coax. You should not run an appliance consistently without a ground. Google: Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator. You plug this little gadget into the wall then plug the TV into it. It filters out all ground noise and your picture will become clear and without those cursed lines. If the problem is in the coax ground... google Viewsonics VSIS-EU Cable TV Ground Loop Isolator.
