I guess it's the same idea with "a pair of scissors"...It just sounds good to the ear I suppose

I've never heard it referred to as a "pair of stepladders" Tellitome! Maybe it started because there are 2 sides to it? Not sure.

Like most others, I've never heard that used for a stepladder. Where are you from? Great Britain, maybe? Or somewhere here in the States I've never visited for any length of time?

Who says that? We happen to have two stepladders. But singularly, each one is a stepladder. Do you consider one stepladder a thing or things? Happy Friday! :)

Do you? I just call it a stepladder. Unless you mean that thingy that has two ladders, one on each side, with the step on top and that folds up. That could be called a pair. But I still just call it a stepladder. It is sort of like "forceps" or "pliers/ clippers" when it is all one tool. One side of pliers cannot ply...and one half of clippers cannot clip. "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" (smile)

I have never heard it phrased that way, that I can recall. I just say ladder...of course, I rarely use one and it's rarer still for them to come up in conversation. I will listen more closely for "pair of stepladders" to be used. ;-)

I have never said, or heard it said - but than I've been told I don't listen so good. Maybe a regional or cultrural thing.

Honestly, if someone asked me to bring a pair of stepladders... I'd bring two.

I don't know what you're talking about. I've never heard this before. Must be a regional thing. Where you at?

Maybe that depends on where you grew up. I've always called it a step ladder. Now a pair of pants / panties / underwear... I don't get.

Coz a ladder has only one leg, a step ladder has two---a pair.
