  • That depends upon a number of factors: the type of vehicle, how it is being used, and speeds driven. (The higher the speed or weight, the higher the heat, and the quicker the breakdown of the grease.) Most larger trucks and vehicles could stand a grease / gear lube change after 80,000 miles. In cars and light vehicles we used to recommend it after 100,000 to 120,000 miles. But only the owner's manual or manufacturer can give you a definitive answer, based upon the vehicle in question. As a former mechanic, though, I usually liked to replace the gear oil / grease on a NEW vehicle after the first 5,000 to 10,000 miles (depending upon conditions), since during the break-in period small particles of metal can be generated during the break-in period. After that I would wait until 100,000 miles.
