You can buy a bottle of stuff at the drug store, it's not expensive, maybe $5, and I believe it's called No Bite. It tastes absolutely awful and will definitely make you stop! I have used it a number of times as I am a chronic nail biter. I have stopped using it because two of my cats suck on my fingers while I'm sleeping and I'm worried they'll get sick.

The other way I've stopped is to pick up a fake nail set at the drugstore (approx. $10). This will stop you from biting too but you have to be committed to gluing them back on when they fall off as they aren't as strong as the kind you would get at a salon.

You could also get a very thin pair of cotton gloves to wear but you will look a bit silly and would probably get tired of explaining what the gloves are for.

I searched and searched the net looking for an answer to this - most are the same old hints re acrylic nails and bitter tasting polish. The one that's really worked for me is an elastic band on my wrist - every time you catch your hand near your mouth, give it a good hard snap. After three days, I found I could stop the urge to bite just thinking about the pain...I used a pony tail band so it didn't look too odd...worked for me, anyway. Good luck!

Calm down, hun. Your whole life doesn't need to change because of this one little habit, and it's not worth getting frustrated or exasperated about. This is a VERY common habit. The solution is simple. First of all, try to take your mind off your nails when you feel like biting them. Think about something totally different, like school, your boyfriend, or your friends. Second of all, cut your nails often. Longer nails beg to be bitten more. Third of all, if you're not doing anything in class, just listening to your teacher or something, sit on your hands. Not that your dirty or anything, but it helps take away the temptation because nobody wants to bite what has just been under a butt. Fourth of all, you don't need to buy medecine. If you have pepper dust in your house, gently put it on her nails. It can help in diffferent ways. If you like pepper dust by itself, you'll be able to lick your fingers more instead of biting them. And if you don't like it, then you'll be tempted not to taste the icky flavor. Fifth of all, you can tell a friend to help you.If she sees you biting your nails, she can tell you, and you'll notice you're doing the wrong thing. This is convinient because sometimes you get so nervous you don't even notice you're biting your nails. Sixth of all, for the first three weeks of your no-biting-nail-strike, you might want to set rewards for yourself. If you don't bite your nails for 3 days, you can go to a spa to get them painted or tipped so you won't even feel like biting them that much anymore. Make up your own rewards. Giving this up is not diffucult, and you DON'T have to do all of the above. Just keep in mind that it's a natural habit even though it's un-sanitary, and if you work hard, it'll go away quickly.

The nasty-flavored, clear nail polish is a good way to interrupt the habit. For some people that is all it takes to break the behavioral cycle. To keep from restarting, you may need to identify the trigger for your gnawing, since like all negative reinforcements, the bad taste experience will be forgotten (technically the stimulus/response link will "extinguish" eventually) unless you keep using that polish.
If you find yourself compelled to nip rough spots with your teeth, keep your nails trimmed and use cuticle cream, making sure you have a zillion emery boards scattered throughout your life-spaces.
If you are willing to nibble on a perfectly tidy nail, then you may be experiencing a problem with anxiety and the solution to that problem is more complicated.

i tried No Bite nail polish and it taste horrible! You just have to remember that it will taste bad dont bite! and you also have to keep re painting your nails. also if say you have a sandwhich or something.. you cant lick your fingers they will taste horrible and make everything you eat after that taste horrible because you still have the taste in your mouth! i have also tried the fake nails but i just bite those apart. i found if u get a necklace that has like a guitar pick or a piece of plastic on it and you chew on the plastic it gets you away from biting your nails. my problem was that i bit the guitar pick until it broke. lol. also try chewing gum all the time.

basically the best thing would probley be the No Bite nail polish. it helped me stop for about a month. i just got lazy and didnt keep repainting my nails.

I bit my nails for years. Then, my friend and I got acrylic nails done at the nail salon. I had those nails (done every 2 weeks) for a little less than a year. I no longer habitually bite my nails. I can keep them nice and pretty, without the fake nails now. I think I probably would not have stopped if it weren't for the acrylics. It was definitely the cure for me (and it looked pretty too).

Just remember that biting your nails is a sign of insecurity and it makes you inferior to everyone else!

With that stigma on your mind maybe you'll think twice about continuing that habit.
