Mario was the name of the landlord of Nintendo of America's headquarters. The character first appeared as "Jumpman" in Donkey Kong, as a carpenter. He would be teamed up soon after with Luigi in "Mario Bros." (not to be confused with "Super Mario Bros."), this time, as a plumber.

Luigi's name came from a pizza parlor. Nintendo of America's headquarters at the time in Redmond, Washington had a pizza place nearby by the name of "Mario & Luigi's." His name originated there.

Mario originated in the arcade game Donkey Kong back in the early 80's.
