When people say, that person is very smart but doesn't have any common sense....don't they really mean that that person doesn't have any 'street smarts'? 'Common sense' implies that it is 'common' and smarts aren't that uncommon.

    Street smarts implies that the smart has come from personal experience, as in a wealthy businessman who didn't go to college.
    It is refered to common sense because it something that would appear so obvious to the person who says this of someone that it is believed to be common knowledge. The smarter someone is, the more the person calls things 'common sense'.

    I used to say my ex was the smartest dumb person i know. She would get full marks at school then do somthing stupid like try and walk home along at 3 in the morning.
