Lucky Jim, by Kingsley Amis, the story of an idle, ignorant, untalented, anti-intellectual, university teacher, was the book that encouraged me to become an idle, ignorant, untalented, university teacher. (It didn't quite make me anti-intellectual.)
A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole contained a character, Ignatius Reilly, whose attitude to modernity reflected my own.
The effect of these two books was to lead me to my present greatness: I am a great procrastinator.

Dunces blew me away -- I laughed so hard. Great read. I'm sure there are numerous levels to the whole thing but my main memory is laughing a lot.
