Question

Help answer this question below.

Is there any connection of the name Buda in Budapest to the name Buddha as in the religion. I know the the city was named Buda after the Tartar invasion but not sure if it has any connection to the Buddhist religion. Would appreciate any comments.

    no, definitely no such connection.

but you're slightly wrong there, Buda had it's name long before the Tartar invasion. it is most likely that the city was named after Buda, who was brother to Attila the Hun. that was around the time when the Hungarian people occupied this area.

however, another interesting theory exists about the name. there was a Roman city at the same place before the Hungarian people arrived. it was called Aquincum, which roots to the Roman word aqua, which stands for water. some say that Slavic tribes had some communication channels with the Romans and started to call the city Voda, which also stands for water. deforming the name Voda to Buda was just one step away.

thanks for the question, i never would have done this research without it :)
