I use an external hard drive and "ghosting" software. That way, if the hard drive fails, I just boot that one up and I'm good. This is a slow method, however, and isn't recommended for anything less than an advanced user.
If you want to back up to disk(CD or DVD) then Nero. But if you want to do a regular backup of your system I would recomend the Seagate Freeagent Go. It come with its only software for backups and is super simple to use.
Nero (I assume you mean the CD burning/msbackup programs built into windows). As much as Nero is a little bloaty, it's still quite good, especially if you want support (most freeware programs lose practically ALL of their points in the support category).
