  • Hi Marguerite. I know there are some great possible answers for this, and probably one right answer. Im gonna say George Washington. Hes made a point to set the bar pretty high for his competition.
  • You can do a google search and come up with some good answers to "most decorated soldier". But for me, the most highly decorated soldier EVER is the one for whom the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetary commemerates. "Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God" This stands in memory of those fallen who were never identified; letting them, their families, and their fellow surviving soldiers-at-arms know that their sacrifice shall not be forgotten, no matter WHO they are. In my mind, even the most decorated combat veteran must look up to them.
  • At one time it was Audey Murphy. I don't know if it still is or not.
  • It was Audie Murphy, from Texas, served as a infantryman in WW-2 was the MOST highly decorated soldier in US Army history.
  • There are quite a few and it would depend on if you wanted to look up the amount of awards total, or the rank of the awards some notables are Lt. General Lewis "Chesty" Puller who has something along the lines of 52 awards including 5 Navy Croses. Also Robert L Howard who recieved the CMOH, and 8 Purple Hearts to name a few. Both can be found on Wiki! There are of course others but both are honorable men along with all mentioned on this page.
  • Some of the replies confuse MOST decorated with most HIGHLY decorated. MOST decorated in terms of volume? Hard to say. Most HIGHLY decorated in terms of both QUANTITY and QUALITY of decorations? This is a subjective thing also. David Hackworth has 2 DSC's (the 2nd highest combat award for valor), 10 Silver stars (Yes TEN), 9 Bronze stars, 8 purple hearts and yet he never was awarded the M.O.H. Some of the WWII Naval Submarine commander had the M.O.H. & multiple Navy Crosses. WHat about Smedley Butler? A Marine that had 2 Medals of Honor and a Brevet medal (slightly below the M.O.H. but above the Navy Cross in ranking for bravery) So he would be the closest thing to a 3 time M.O.H. recipient. Audie Murphy would certainly be in the top 10 most highly decorated AMERICAN soldiers in history.
  • Also there was Matt Urban, Sgt. Major Dan Daly, Eddie Rickenbacker, and others. See this link: http://www.homeofheroes.com/quickquiz/050801_mostdecorated.html
  • Cpt. Joe Ronnie Hooper, according to www.arlingtoncemetery.net is the most decorated U.S. Solder unfortunately after his time in Vietnam he suffered greatly from PTSD and drank himself to death. His life ended very tragically and that is why most people haven’t heard about him.
