I far as I know it is, we have had a few at our cemetery from plain pine box to custom made Urn crypt. Just call one of your local cemetery and ask them and/or funeral homes, then be sure and put it down some where in writing what your wishes are so people know what you want done.

Yes it is legal to make your own coffin, its recognized as a outer burial container which has to be approved by the cemetery you or your loved one will be dispositioned. It can be basic ply wood unfinished and sealed.

I think it would depend on the cemetary as most coffins used today have airtight seals.
