Help answer this question below.

My period has never been irregular, I had an abortion recently and after it my next 2 periods were still regular. Now I am 5 days late for my 3rd period. I have taken multiple pregnancy test, all negative. Is it poss. my pei. is jus irreg. now?

    Your abortionist should have informed you of the risks and complications, but since he didn't, here goes.

    There are several possible causes for the bleeding. It may be that some tissue from the pregnancy remained in your uterus. This would tend to cause prolonged bleeding, clots, and sometimes discomfort. Another possibility is that you have had some infection (this is a common cause of irregular bleeding, and of prolonged bleeding after abortion). Sometimes after a pregnancy hormonal patterns are altered, and this is yet another possible cause of irregular bleeding.

    It would be wise to see your GP, as some of the things that could be causing your bleeding need treatment.
    When you see your GP, he or she will ask you some questions and decide whether it is necessary to examine you. During the examination (s)he may take some swabs to exclude infection. If a smear test is due, then this could be done at the same time. If you are also getting abdominal pain, an ultrasound scans might be organised.

    If infection is found then treatment with antibiotics is likely to alleviate the problem. If there was evidence of any tissue from the pregnancy remaining in your uterus a small operation (D&C) might be required. However, it may well be that no cause is found. If this is the case it is likely that your periods will eventually become regular again, but it is difficult to predict when this might be.
