I do not agree at all. Whether you call it serendipity, synchronicity or fortuitous circumstances, there is "something" outside of hard work and planning that is a bonus in some lives..some unknown "additive" to the fuel of life..some people seem to have access to that additive more often than others. You can intellectualize all you want, the fact remains some of us are "luckier" than others. Now, perhaps there is a solid scientific reason behind that luck..but we're not smart enough to know what that is so we call it "luck". Maybe the "luck" starts with the configuration of our genes or those of our ancestors..I don't know. Happy Monday! :)

I disagree in the strongest possible terms. I think the evidence of life is that chance/luck plays a much larger role than people with to believe.

  how can a person be lucky. if you are in a car crash and survive- that isn't luck, it is just that the way you crshed didn't cause enough damage to kill you.

- @holden4 - I'm not sure how you are differentiating 'luck' from 'chance'. However, some 'luck' is driven by society's choices.

  For example, in Gladwell's Outliers book, he discusses how the overwhelming majority of great hockey players are born in January, February, and March.
  .
  This has *nothing* to do with their astrological sign. It is an artifact of the cutoff date for junior hockey leagues (i.e. what age a player is on Jan. 1). So, a 9-year-old born on Jan 3 is nearly a year older than a 9-year-old born on Dec 30.
  .
  At that age, a year is a *huge* difference in maturity. So, the early-born players make the All-Star team, get the extra coaching and practice, and play with better teammates. After a few years of this, they have a *huge* advantage over their late-born rivals.
  .
  There are any number of ways this 'luck' could be counteracted (change the cutoff date, have multiple leagues, etc.). But under the current system, the early-born are the 'lucky' ones.

That depends what you mean. If someone wins the lottery, you can say "it was the luck of the draw," or that person is lucky to have won, and that's true. It is not saying that the person has consistently good or bad luck.

I disagree, luck DEFINITELY exists.
I'm not so sure about lucky charms and stuff, but I think that some people are just lucky and often find themselves in the right place at the right time.

Disagree, although luck is not what most people think it is.

The concept of luck is not something you possess. Rather, it describes a result. That is, when an improbable event occurs, it did not occur because of the force of luck. But the fact that it did occur can be described as luck.

Perhaps a solid example is in order. Suppose you pick the winning numbers in a lottery, and suppose the odds of doing so were 500 million to one. That is a highly improbable event. The fact that win is certainly lucky giving the high probability against you. But the fact that you win was not caused by being lucky, rather, it was mere chance.

There is definately such a thing as luck and people have specific patterns of luck. Some have a little good luck, then, a lot of bad luck; Some have a lot of good luck, then, a little bad luck, etc.

Logically, I would say no. But I've seen some people who sure seem to be mighty lucky--like repeatedly finding 10 or 20 dollar bills on the ground, buying scratch-off lottery tickets that usually win, or stumbling upon some great deal when they weren't even looking for one.

Good things and bad things happen with particular probabilities. If your estimate of the probability of a good thing happening is less than the actual probability, you will be pleasantly surprised when the happening takes place more frequently than you expected it to: you will feel lucky. The converse is also true. There is no such thing as luck. Just subjective assessments of probability.

Well falling off my 125cc bike 4 times now, 3 times on diesel, 1 time i dunno how - i walked away with no cuts / bruses / injuries i was perfectly fine - the first one i was slightly dizzy as my head had hit the surface but i should have went to hospital 4 times for each one as they were really leathal falls. And yet i was perfectly fine. My bike however has had so many problems and my recent one was today and i managed to get home from town stuck in 2nd gear as the gear lever was totally bent as it had hit the road it caused it to bend. I managed to fix that, and minutes later it felt as if it was merely a dream or a thought.

If that isn't luck or chance or jammy what is it??

I have no time for luck, life's what you make it. There is however chance and probabilities and this sometimes looks like luck. In other words someone could seem lucky in business, but that's probably because they have more money.

Up-shot is if you spend your life waiting for luck, you will grow old and gray searching, if you depend on training, competency and confidence you will have more opportunities.

As Gary Player said "the harder I work, the luckier I get"

No.

It's a combination of the consequences of a person's own actions, statistics and random behavior - which sometimes clusters making "lucky / unlucky" streaks look like they are happening.

Luck is just a series of coincidences that might be unknown or too complex to explain. The old saying "work hard and you'll become luckier" can be quite true... basically you are setting up the right conditions for good things to unexpectedly happen. Conversely, if you live on the edge, take lots of risks, put yourself in dangerous situations, you may be setting up the right conditions for bad things to happen.

No, but it is easier to believe you are unlucky person rather than acknowledge god hates you.

Just kidding god isn't real either.

Good things and bad things happen all the time. It is in our nature as human beings to constantly question why. Answerbag would be a lonely place if we didn't.

Luck is but one simple way of answering the why.
