I've never heard of any one having charges pressed. But you do have their car. You need to give it back if you want to have a chance to work this out without them getting a judgement and taking money from any paycheck you get. (depends on state, in some this is not possible)
First, you're not going to jail, debtor's prisons went away in the 18th century. Second, kiss your credit rating goodbye. If you can get a loan at all in the next seven to ten years, it will be at a much higher interest rate. It may also be harder to get a job as some employers check your credit history now.
Contact the loan company ASAP. There may still be a chance to salvage things. If they want to be nasty, they can take back the car, and make you pay every dime of the loan even though you don't have the car anymore.
You should get in touch with the company you brought the car off ASAP, discuss your options they should be willing to help. It could have a worse outcome if you leave it. Now you wont have criminal Charges but you may go to court to be made to pay out for the car. Also the car company will now take possession of the car and ask you to make up the arrears. If you cant they will sell it and still ask you to pay what you owe. Your Credit Rating will be affected....
Surrendering my car. An unfinished project left lots of custom and missing interior parts. No one will buy it as is. What will the bank say?
