I have an older friend who is currently on 17 different medications. Is this advisable or just a sign of getting older and having various medical conditions?

My first question is: Is your friend seeing multiple doctors? This might be the case if they have multiple ailments. I'd suggest that this person make a list of their medications, the dosage, and frequency that they take them, as well as what they think that they are taking them for (believe it or not, what people think they are taking them for and what they ARE for can be very different!). Take this medication list to each doctor and ask about any potential side effects or interactions of these medications. Please remember to tell them to write down and herbal or other medications they are taking as well! (St. John's Wort, Ginkoba, etc)

Overmedicating in older patients can lead to confusion, kidney failure, heart problems, and respiratory problems. The multiple doctors might not know what the each other is prescribing.

    Good question.
