In the early days there was the wagon and most people used this form of transportation. This was the earliest form of the limo that people have been able to find. In these days there was a wagon master who acted as the chauffer and spent time in the front seat. The people they carried varied in wealth and they operated under the same principle as the limo companies of today. They would take the time to make the routes to the places that their passengers needed to go. This was very common and the lengths to which they would go saw no bounds. It was not until much later that the higher class of wagon was introduced. This was the time when the very rich and famous would hire the wagon masters to take them to and from their destinations and they would be riding in much comfort.

When the car was finally introduced it was not long before the companies would take the time to make them into limos.

In 1921, New York businessman J.P. Carey founded a chauffeur service with six Packard touring cars to serve wealthy travelers arriving at Grand Central Station. This is considered the first limousine company.

In 1928, the Armbruster Coach Company of Arkansas invented the first automobile to be called a limousine.
