  • Chicago is a city, California is a state. New York could be either a state or a city. Chicago stands in Illinois. Chicago is the most expensive place to live in Illinois. New York City is the most expensive in New York state. San Francisco is the most expensive city in California. Each State has their 'well-to-do' areas where the median price of a home is measured in millions of dollars. Thus Beverly Hills is perhaps one of the most expensive places to live in California, ranked with or a little lower than other communities. According to this site: http://www.ded.mo.gov/researchandplanning/indicators/cost_of_living/index.stm the cost of living is higher In California: California: 136.5 New York State: 130.5 Illinois: 97.1 Those numbers are the index, there is a list that breaks it down to various aspects of living expenses (food, housing, blah). The problem with 'how much does it cost to live there' is that most people work fairly close to where they work. While the median cost to live in California is higher than Illinois, the average Californian brings in a little more than the average Illinoisan. The two sides of this equation also extend to such things as government checks (Social Security, Disability) where 'cost of living' adjustments are made based on where you live. All of this is not going to apply for very much longer, the economy has taken a few large and many minor hits and is presently undergoing massive shifts here in the USA and across the globe. I tried to get the latest figures for you, however with the recent 'terrible' Christmas shopping season things will need to be adjusted to account for this shift. Also many companies have graciously held off not laying off people until after the holidays. There is a potential for the cost of living to earnings made charts to change drastically over the next 6 months.
  • Hi sweetie... Happy New Year! I have lived in all three places. I believe California to be the most expensive salary to spending. Even the broke assed neighborhoods in california are stupid high! New York runs a close second and Chicago is third runner up.
  • New York! Someone I know has a one bedroom apartment and pays almost $2000/mth.Not fancy just close to downtown.
