Take it back for a full refund.

I Can't help you with this problem, but I had a similar issue with a new 4th gen, 16GB Nano. When I attempted to start playing a movie (purchased from iTunes), the screen went black, and the device hung. I discovered that if I performed a full reset and then tried to play a movie it worked consistently (and for a while thereafter).

Subsequently, I exchanged the unit for an equivalent one, and the same problem exists. At least I now know that it wasn't a particular device. This may simply be fixed by Apple when they release a new firmware upgrade - fingers crossed.

    Battery charged?
Instructions read on how to operate?

Last resort: Take it back for a refund or instruction on how to use.

I bought a portable CD player several years ago and it would not work for more than 10 seconds. I took it back and the service desk put in new batteries and it worked fine. My question was, how did they get discharged in the box?
