I love Tom Petty.

I love John Mayer. I think it is great. I frankly think John Mayer is one of the few artists that wouldn't screw up any classic song. I just think he is too talented and smart.

- Mayer will go down as one of the all time greats. He will eventually rank right up there with Paul Simon and Elton John and the like, as a *great* singer/songwriter.

I honestly don't think the original was all that great to begin with. Uninspired, three-chords repeated endlessly, and I found the lyrics to be quite pretentious. I don't see any reason to do a remake of this song, but that's just me. Also, I hate John Mayer.

I think it's unnecessary. This isn't a song that had a good enough reason to be redone. His version is certainly not an improvement or anything.

- hmm...interesting. I think cover songs are more about giving your own artistic interpretation of a song than 'improving' upon it in any way.

- I guess it is. However, that's one of those songs that was a hit and still fairly fresh in people's minds. If he did some obscure song or something, it might work better. I don't know. It's not a big deal. I'm not impressed with it, that's all. I'm sure others enjoy it.

- Yeah, I see your point, but the original was recorded almost 20 years ago. So I'm sure it most people wouldn't describe it as fresh in their minds, especially young people. Thanks for sharing your opinion with me, though!

- That's a long time. I think I only said that because I seem to hear it on TV a lot. I don't know whether it's in commercials or what but it seems to still be around. Anyway, you're welcome : )
