Because there are so many people. In hindu we are all brahman, Different aspects of the same thing.

Hindu is a one religion, there is only one GOD, but they name it in different ways(Like in USA, people call JESUS, in India they call YEASU it's same god and same statue) and worship in different ways, because there are different cast and different language's people are there. They come from different states and countries. They believe in their own beliefs and whatever they learned from their grate parents to grand parents they follow the same way. Even nobody knows that why they have many gods properly because, when we ask somebody, they give the same answer that, whatever their parents taught and do them to. Different aspects of the same thing. Most of the South Indians worship same god as others do, but they name it in different way and pray it in different ways.
