I have a Gateway Performance 1300 Monterrey MBD about 7 years old. The power supply inside was fried by a power surge, now I've replaced the pack but there is an extra port on the motherboard with 6 prongs is there anyone out there who knows what this is

You'r computer has RAMBUS, It would be a good idea to abandon ship.

six prongs could be a lot of things, especially on a gateway, dell, or compaq which use highly proprietary parts that are not found on any other computer. Did you buy the new Power Supply Unit (PSU) from a retailer like Best Buy or CompUSA? A photograph would help a lot.
