Light catalyses a reaction where water present in all fabrics reacts with atmospheric oxygen to make hydrogen peroxide, which is a bleaching agent. The UV light in sunlight is about a hundred times more effective at doing this than artificial light, but fabrics will fade even in artificial light eventually. Bleaching agents work by attacking the double bonds which give dyes their color.
