  • Yes I would i would like to know why mine arnt that helpful!
  • I'll resubmit my answer so everyone likes it this time. Yes, we should do it. It will make the site all rainbows and lollipops and may even solve world hunger.
  • yes, i would also like to see who did it.
  • yes but i dont think it would work, people would just say stuff like i didnt like your answer or it was bad or something
  • yes otherwise you dont know the reason, and cant better it.
  • That is a good idea Jodie!
  • I think it would be nice to know why one was rated down, but we would have to add an option to make it easier to comment anonymously so as to avoid retribution.
  • yes...that's a good idea....it would make some trolls give it up..haha
  • Yes, it may help stop these people using the site as a playground and just going through downrating everything in sight
  • Yes, but. . . Leaving an anonymous comment is a fantastic idea as long as used properly. Somebody could just type in "jhygkdshckd" and call it a comment. The idea presented is a happy medium considering the ratings wars and troll activity. Unfortunately, no matter what, somebody will find a way around whatever safeguards are in place.
  • As a point of clarification - No one can make anyone write the real reason he/she downrated an answer, of course. Is that a valid reason for not giving people who'd like to comment, but don't from fear of retaliatory negative ratings, an opportunity to be heard?
  • Yes. That would help stop many trolls.
  • It might encourage some to be more responsible for their actions.
  • The argument goes both ways. On the one hand, I feel that it isn't fair for someone to be able to leave a bad rating without explaining why. On the other hand, bad ratings used to require a comment, which led to ratings wars and lots of fighting. So it's better this way. What I'd like to see (as Jodie suggests in her question) is to require a comment with a bad rating, but allow the comment to be anonymous. FWIW, I also think they should go back to having questions be anonymous.
  • NO!! It will just encourage more nitpicking and detract from the core stuff
  • As some people have pointed out, it may not be a perfect solution but I don't think there IS a perfect solution (at least, not without the thought police). This is a good middle ground and should be seriously considered by management.
  • Yes,...as long as they make sure its anonymous. If you had to leave your name, people would retaliate.
  • I would like to see the OPTION to choose either anonymous or identified comments. Either way, the user should be required to comment in order to down-rate; it would be nice if they had a choice about whether or not to identify themselves.
  • Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
  • No, I don't think that this should be required, but it could be presented as an option for those who would like to post a comment but don't want any retaliation because of the comment.
  • Think it would be a great idea if people submitted honest feedback but cynical though I am I honestly don't believe people would take the time to type sensible constructive criticism. If an option was available to comment on feedback left similar to ebay, and a feedback removel/appeal system so that comments such as guhfpwuprgwh could be removed and the correponding negative rating this would make a positive difference and hopefully stop people from rating answers and questions negatively just for the sake of it.
  • I would, BUT.. the vision of seeing comments like "dumb answer" and "why don't you screw yourself" isn't that appealing. :P WAAAAY BACK when AB was new, it was REQUIRED for you to leave comments when you rate someone down. AND its not anonymous. Yet somebody still left me a whole string of really nasty comments. Apparently, me seeing his name is not enough of a deterrent for him. If he can do it even with his name attached on each nasty sentence he typed, think of other mean people who can do the same, if not worse, with the protection of animosity.
  • Yes I think anonymous negative comments would be good. But its also o.k the way it is now.
  • Well, I understand your point in asking, cause we're all been hit by spineless bastards, who have either a strong opinion or a mean spirit, but always tiny balls (or tits)! However, those particular FEW aren't worth their weight in getting this much freedom to bother any of us. Honestly, most of them wouldn't have a reason for being the asswipes they are anyway, so why bother trying to offer them an opportunity to fess up behind an anonymous mask? When most of us choose a "not helpful" rating for someone's answer, we take time to say why, because that's what we want when someone does it to us. The best we can do is just be who we are on here, as we are in person, and simply practice what we preach and hope others will do likewise.
  • Yes. I am so sick of trolls, and I am sure everyone else is, too. It's not like it matters in the end - the negative points don't add up. But it's the thought that someone out there is so foolish and immature that they take cheap shots at other people for entertainment. It needs to be stopped.
  • I think it would be helpful, I also think it would be helpful to know why some people go about MODERATING and putting questions as spam or nonsense when you are asking something about how the site works. Too many people are getting moderation points at the expense of others and people never know why their question has been flagged
  • Why do they have to be annonymous. If you have a point of view you should be mature enough to back it up. hiding behind the annonymous tag only encourages spite and small mindedness.
  • Yes, I think it would be a good idea....if you've given an answer which you already know is silly, then wear your negative rating with pride. However if you have answered with the best of intentions and get kicked downstairs, it would be helpful to know what the rater found so UNhelpful about it.
  • Yes, but it should go both ways; if you rate up (an answer at least), you should comment also. I don't like the downrating without justification, but I also hate seeing irrelevant questions getting more points than they deserve. I also don't like seeing a "cutesy" answer to a serious question get points either. That's just as senseless. While we're at it, how about we disable ratings for opinion-only questions (and their answers)? That is, any question that starts with, "Which do you like more...?" or "What's the best ever...?"
  • yes, I don't think it would be necessary for positives, obviously the person agrees, but if a person is moved enough to downrate, it shouldn't be so hard to say why. Also, it's more useful to recipient to get constructive criticism, rather than just downrated.
  • Not only should they have to give a reason, but never anonymous. If you feel strong enough to leave a downrate you should be willing to say it with aname attached. That would kill the troll's before they even begin their stupid game. But if it has to be allowed with the anonymous clause so be it, it's better than nothing.
  • Yes, this would offer a further learning experience, not just for those getting rated "not helpful", but also for those reading for posing their future questions.
  • Yes! I recently got downrated 5 points for a question to which no one has even responded yet! Clearly, the person/people just don't want to acknowledge the fact that the possible answer to my question may go against their beliefs. Grr...
  • no. i like giving people the right to choose. there are sometimes when i can't figure out why someone has rated a specific answer down and would like to know why, but then again ... there's some answers that i rate down and don't leave a comment on because they seem to be obviously not helpful or just didn't answer the question in any way. with those, i'd rather just rate them down and not have to take the time to comment on it. i would guess they know their answer sux.
  • i think it would especially help me as far as questions. it seems as though every question i write is downrated and i have no idea why! and therefore can't improve without the criticism ...
  • In an ideal world, I would be behind that idea %100. But in a real world, I think the feature has too much potential for people to get around it, and possibly even abuse it. If it were to be added, it would have to be with some safegaurds. Such as placing the ratings-related comments in a pull down menu below the points counter, to reduce the instance of people having to look at a bunch of nonsense comments that people posted because they didn't want to explain their down-rates.
  • Yes, Jodie! I agree! I see this has been an issue for quite some time. It must recycle itself every few months or so. ;-)
  • YES!! i would love to know why people rate negitivatly sometimes
  • Nothing to add to previous postings, which have pretty well covered just about everything. Only my 'yes' vote.
  • No, I do not like anonymous comments.
