Help answer this question below.

Would the beam of a lightsaber cast a shadow? I just saw the shadow of Obi-Wan's blade in EP III. The beam is light; would light cast a shadow?

    Lightsabers are solid. Light can't act as a sword, Lightsabers can.

    think E=mc^2 in some crazy "far far away" technology. Since the beam of the Lightsaber acts in a way that we can't scientifically understand, it is possible that they do.

    Lightsaber blades obviously have mass, they hit each other. However, they have a very high energy output, as evidenced by the glow.

    Since a shadow is basically a lack of illumination, compared to the surrounding area caused by a physical object between the source of light and the plane. It really depends on the circumstances, and the properties of the blade.

    NOTE: the different colors also reinforce the fact that it is some form of advanced technology. Crystals act to focus the blade, and a different crystal will create a different color. This means that the crystals are somehow utilized to create the blades, and that different crystals have different properties, reflected in the color of the blade. (think lasers, different gasses create different color beams)

    PS That's why Mace Windu's lightsaber is the only one that is purple. It is a rare crystal, essentially only found one one planet.

    I believe it would create shadows. It is light so the absence of that light would create a darker area that I would define a shadow.
