Help answer this question below.
I know a lot of guys who have done that. They practice constantly.
I am mostly self taught on guitar but my husband taught me to play the piano a little and then I just practiced by myself for years. I got some help later from his mom, too, who was a piano teacher. But I have mostly been on my own.
Yeah I taught myself how to play guitar.
I am currently teaching myself to play piano.
Its very rewarding.
Oh, baby, did I ever! And if I may say so myself, I play a mean banjo
I've taught myself to play the guitar and the bass....very badly.
Yes. Guitar
Yes it was 20 years ago a was holding the guitar for the first time :-)
i play guitar and my guitar teacher and brother tought me. i learned how to play my favorite songs on this website www.ultimate-guitar.com also put the dash in between ultimate and guitar
I started out with a few piano and guitar lessons for a few months as a kid but gave up on that...played French Horn in grade school and of course got a little education in music then.. I now (25 years later) play guitar, bass, piano, drums and sing..all self taught basically...not to say I haven't studied and bough books and practiced and all of that but I had no outside help or assistance.
Up to a point, then I took lessons on piano. Guitar? I took lessons.
Piano but the easy one!
I started teaching myself guitar 3 years ago through tabs and watching the professionals. I can't have someone teach me, i can't learn that way.
yes..in many contexts..
While I self taught myself to play the bass guitar I want to take a moment to say that no one really self teaches-there are many things that even self starters themselves have to do to learn to play. For most instruments there are rules that apply-chords dont form themselves and without learning them you cant really play-while you can play by ear and feel its important to illustrate the need to read music to become well rounded and versatile-that said-even self starters turn to a multitude of resources at some point to hone their skills-as such self starter or not no one is ever truly self taught-to learn you most assuredly will rely on someone else for tips influence and instruction making the term self taught a horribly ignorant misnomer.
I taught myself how to play the drums since I was about 6 years old....just a lot of practicing for years and years. I taught myself bass guitar but electric guitar, my homie taught me the basic then I had took home lessons to get much better.
Accordion, so I could at least understand what my son was talking about while he was (and still is) having lessons. Already played the piano, so that made it alot easier to pick up the accordion.
I don't play any instruments, but my husband always teaches himself how to play whatever instrument he happens to be interested in at the time.
Truth is, he usually picks something up and starts playing it..and it sounds really good...then when you ask him when he learned to play that instrument he always says...
"I didn't, I am not playing it..I am just playing around with it."
MUST BE NICE>
my bro showed me the basics to bass when i was 14, after that i just picked it up myself
Had lessons to learn the basics of Piano, the rest is just practice, practice, practice. Usually picked a piece of music beyond my ability then took the time to learn it.
yep - piano!
I'm teaching myself how to play the guitar right now. I just bought it last week and for now I'm just watching random videos online. Seems to be working well so far.
i taught myself how to play the "drumset". I did play the drums in highschool band however which helped me with the basics such as rolls and paradiddles.
Yes. All five of them.
Yes, guitar and Piano. I think I taught myself because i am stubborn. I've been playing for roughly 6 years and just recently started taking advice which is helping me more than I could have imagined.
yeppp da bass
yes piano and bass
The drums. I kind of regret having never taken any classes early on, there are some basics that I am only just now learning.
For a few years when I was really young. The teacher I was gonna have said my hands weren't big enough. Jokes on her, Rachmaninov's prelude in C sharp minor, Biatch!
I don't know which "instrument" you're talking about, but I had lessons on both.
yes im learning trumpet
i taught myself piano at first
then i got lessons
same for guitar
and i got drum lessons too
woooo
that s filthy
I started learning piano theory but after my third lesson I thought it was incredibly boring, so I stopped. I then began teaching myself piano at home; listening to songs and playing them by ear (which, I might add, I'm pretty good at doing). Unfortunately I'm not strong on the theoretical part of music, but it isn't because I can't understand it...it's just because I'm lazy...
:)
yea...its hard, and usually you have to know somthing about music (sing, or play another instrument). If your trying to. first fugure out simple tunes like mary had a little lamb and things like that. build from there. and hate to say it but its impossible if you dont practice all the time. not hours at a time, but often so you dont forget what youve learned
Hey Tom, Yes I did as well from age 9 or 10. When my thumb and forefinger got ripped off on the rigs by a set of power tongs I almost gave up. Praise GOD! All it did was make me more determined. I joined Tony Iommi and several others in the ranks of 3 fingered musicians. Know anyone who needs one? LOL! Anyway Sounds like you have made some excellent choices in life and death. I commend you on your choices. Although I am not empowered on paper. I do have a way with interpretation, prophecy, teaching, and strong Testimony. Thank you Lord! Someone asked me what i wanted to be when I grew up. I said Forgiven! My next composition I think. Glory to god, and Bless you abundantly.
I taught my self how to play guitar for about a year, then I signed up for lessons, and eventually ended up being a guitar major in college.
Flute, no. Recorder, kind of. Clarinet, yes, but with the help of a book. Piano, YES.
Yes.
When I was about 8, we had to learn to play the recorder in school. But, the teacher was soooo slow in getting started - first she had to take orders for the instruments, then she had to order them, then wait for them to arrive, and it was November before they had arrived!! We should have started learning in September! Those of us with older brothers and sisters already had a recorder, and I had brought mine every single week, only to be disappointed! So one evening, in late October, I took the recorder to my bedroom, along with the tutor book, and stayed there until I could play! Bear in mind, this also meant teaching myself to read music! I came down an hour later, and played a tune for my family.
I then had lessons in piano and clarinet, but desperately wanted to learn flute - so I bought one when I was 20, and taught myself - largely through listening to Jethro Tull tapes.
Next year, when I eventually buy a harp, I will teach myself that too!
kinda! by covering songs from bands like metallica, zeppelins.......
My sister found a discarded descant recorder on her way to school. At the time, this instrument was a popular one (to music teachers) for introducing musical theory to children because of its small size, and the fact that its range was, in theory, two chromatic octaves. It was not popular with boys because it wasn't made of brass and you couldn't bang it; and I suspect that the recorder found by my sister had been 'lost' by its owner. The descant recorder did not contribute much to aesthetic education as it is very shrill and easily under- or overblown making intonation sketchy at best, but I found a tablature and learnt to play it. I moved on to the alto recorder and played that for a while, but not for a decade or three.
I was taught recorder but taught myself the piano.
No, I had a couple great teachers.
yes i did i play guitar
Quite a bit. Not 100% though. When playing Guitar the player can get trapped in patterns. I got stuck in that situation.
I learnt the keyboard and sax (from teachers). But after playing sax in band i decided to teach myself the flute which was fun. Fully prefered it over sax in the end too!
I taught myself at first and eventually took lessons.
I taught myself to play the drums at a young age (probably around 7 or 8 years old). I'm 16 now, and I also play guitar. I started drumming along with The Beatles, which is a great band to start with because Ringo always kept a consistent beat. I enjoy my music very much now.
As we speak.
I have taught myself to play guitar using the internet and books. I love my guitar, its like an extra limb!!
Do musicians actually count in their heads when playing an instrument? How do they do it when the tempo is fast?

If asked to play, do you perform only music that you like or do you also have a catalogue of songs that appeal to others more than yourself?
