  • The 18mm-200mm is the focal length range for a zoom lens. It corresponds to a lens which can be adjusted from a wide-angle view to a telephoto view. A setting of about 50mm corresponds to a field of view approximately the same as the human eye were this lens on a standard 35mm film camera. The 18mm end of the range corresponds to a wide angle view which would show much more of a scene and be suitable for landscapes of pictures of large groups of people. The 200mm end of the range would be the telephoto end of the range and would be used to bring distant objects closer, much like a telescope.

Most consumer grade DSLR cameras have APS-C sensors which are smaller than the 35mm standard used on film cameras, so you must multiply the focal length by a factor of 1.5-2X to get the effective focal length. The factor varies between different camera models. On a Canon Rebel, a 35mm lens might be closer to the effective length of a "normal" 50mm lens.
