  • They are trying to answer some questions that cannot be answered without doing experiments at this scale. You can find a pretty concise statement of many of questions they are trying to answer here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider#Purpose Since this is considered basic science, it's very hard to predict the sort of practical results that may stem from this work. The questions they are trying to answer, though, have been some of the most vexing problems in physics. And often with these sort of experiments, they find unexpected things that challenge the current set of theories, and force a re-think, which can provide all sorts of breakthroughs and insights that probably wouldn't ever have occurred without the experimental evidence.
