Question

Help answer this question below.

I recently received a sun conure. He/She is about 5 months old. Will he talk with real words or just make bird noises? I was told he would learn to talk, but I'm afraid I've been misled....
Thanks

I have a Green Cheeked Conure. The conure species learns to make noise that they hear frequently. If you talk to the bird a lot it will eventually say some of the things that you say to it. Mine also mimicks my cough, and the cats meow.

This site might help you some. My friend has 2 Sun's and they are both amazing and yes they talk. Yours is just still a baby, give him/her time and work with her.

Is it a male? If the bird is male then most likely you could probably teach him to talk but you would need to repeat words over and over again to him until he mimicks it.

Often a lot of people get tapes of someone saying the same word or phrase over and over again to get the bird to mimic it. My mom has several birds and I've grown up with them. Some of them talk and some don't.

You'll learn not to make a big deal over it. First of all, all they do is mimic sounds they have heard so if someone says enough "You shithead" the bird will mimic that and not know what it means.

Second of all you can't really control when the bird is going to make noise or speak. It takes huge amounts of training to get a bird to speak on command and an almmost obsessive amount of training to get the bird to shut-up on command. I've grown up with birds my whole life and so has my mother and neither one of us know how to train them to speak or not speak on command. So really talking is a mixed blessing.

    Good luck

Yes, just hang on and keep talking to him. Sun Conures are not like African Grey's or Maacaws, which can get HUGE vocabularies. However, if he's just five months old - he needs a little timee to mature. At about 1 and a half to 2, one day you'll wake up and she'll/he'll surprise you by saying his name or whistleing at you. It works best if you keep repeating the same phrases. Like, when you take his cover off of him in the morning, saying "Hi there buddy!" My 6 year old Macaw learned to talk when he was around 2. I pulled his cover off of his cage one morning, and was surprised as hell to hear, "Hello Pippin!" Not bad! Can you say "Pippin" without lips?

Just be patient...after all - even HUMANS don't learn to talk until their two or so!
