  • Hi big r. First off, it's great that you have a Bug! I have had a couple that I have restored and they are a blast to own and drive. As for the shifter, there is a bushing that the shift rod goes through just a couple of inches behind the opening for the shifter(remove two 13mm bolts and the shifter comes right out)There is also a coupler where the shift rod attaches to the transmission. I has a two piece bushing that wears out. The one at the front by the shifter is usually the one that goes bad. You will have to disconnect the shift rod from the trans(this is accessed under the back seat and then under a small metal cover with one screw. Then you have to remove the small round cover on the nose of you bug(right under the hood handle) and the cover on the frame head(between the torsion tubes of you front suspension) The shift rod then slides all the way out the front of the car. You replace the bushing, lube up the shift rod, and slide it back in.
