You start a course and you pay for it. The more courses you do, the more you spend, the more money they get. Scientology is run like a business rather than a religion. When I was at the church or the "org" as they like to call it. I distinctly remember there being a price for everything and never heard about a donation system. Weak minded people (which I once was) are drawn to scientology to become stronger minded and take control of their lives, for a price. Read Lao Tzu's "Tao Te Ching'' and become self enlightened, for free!

The Church of Scientology is run like a pyramid scheme. Members pay for books and training. They then have the option of recruiting new members. Those who recruit then receive up to 10% of whatever CoS makes from new member 'donations.' The new members then start buying books and training, and they go out and recruit more members and so on. Please note that the term donation is misleading as the 'donation' amount is fixed and must be paid before books or services will be received.

From an advertisement for the above mentioned training, recruiters "usually make a significant amount of their income from FSM [field service member] Commissions."

By their members, just like every other church.

Some churches have a system of tithes, others require their members to pay for pew rentals, religious ceremonies and services. In the Church of Scientology, parishioners make donations for auditing or training they wish to receive. These contributions by Scientologists are the primary source of financial support for the Church and fund all the religious and social betterment activities the Church engages in. Scientologists are not required to tithe or make other donations.

Scientology does not have hundreds of years of accumulated wealth and property like other religions — it must make its way in the world according to the economics of today’s society. When one considers the cost of ministering even one hour of auditing, requiring extensively trained specialists, and the overhead costs of maintaining church premises, the necessity of donations becomes clear.

The Church selected the donation system as its primary method of funding because it is the most equitable method. Those who use the facilities of the church should be the ones who contribute most to its maintenance. Of course, no donation is expected from members who are at the church to participate in services other than auditing and training — listening to tape plays of L. Ron Hubbard’s lectures, reading scriptural works in the church library, meeting with fellow parishioners, receiving counseling from the Chaplain or attending Sunday services, sermons, weddings, christenings and funerals.

All donations made to United States Churches of Scientology are deductible against personal income taxes in the United States to the full extent permitted by law. Donations made to Scientology churches outside the United States may be deductible in full or in part, depending on local laws and regulations.

Scientologists’ donations keep the Church alive and functioning, fund its widespread social reform programs, make Scientology known to people who may otherwise never have the opportunity to avail themselves of it, and help create a safe and pleasant environment for everyone.

By preying on their members. I won't call them "parishioners" even though CofS does- always struck me as idiotic since they don't have parishes. Anyway, if they find out a member has any money or home equity they will try to get it from them. Yes, they charge (exorbitantly) for courses and auditing, but they also have some very aggressive fund raisers for which members get nothing in return, not even an overpriced course or intensive of auditing. Maria Pia Gardini, a former member, was preyed upon because they knew she was a millionairess. They even slapped her! Raul Lopez is another case in point. Google both. And when they're not doing that, they're working staff to death for very little money. Right there, that fills their coffers. I have zero objection to someone charging for some kind of practice like auditing or anything like that or for delivering a course, but I am against predatory ripoff behavior and CofS is nothing but predatory. I could say, oh there's times when they are, but really, it's more a case of when AREN'T they predatory and ripping off members?

It is true that you have to pay for some services offered by the church of Scientology. But you don't have to pay to be a Scientologist. Scientology is a beleif system. There are tons of books on the subject in libraries all over the world, and you can even do Scientology and Dianetics auditing sessions for free. There are books that cover exactly how to do this. Pick up a copy and start. They are called "Self-Analysis" and "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health". Boom. There you go, free Scientology.
