I was trying to figure out where this question was going. I don't have an answer cause I am still trying to figure out where the living daylights are..that's what my father threatened "living daylights out of you".. Funny question and really great.. Hope you get an answer..if you do let me know.

Oh Yes, I was threatened with that too. It's scary to think that literally that probably means, LIFE ... although I'm sure no one meant it that way.

Phrase origins alway interest me. This is one I had never thought of. The answer is interesting. Daylight once meant eyes/eyesight it seems. http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/living-daylights.html

my father meant it as my "ability to be able to see the next daylight". Same as, I brought you into this world, I can take you out!

I just thought it meant until you go unconscious. I've heard of that threat before, but I don't think my folks used it on me. They just said "I'm gonna get the belt" and that was enough to make me behave.
