In the early 1800s in Virginia when travelers were going to visit friends or relatives for the holidays, people who had homes near the road would shout "Christmas Eve Gift", which would signify that the traveler was welcome in the home. The visitor would receive the "gift" of food and lodging. The tradition has evolved into the game of calling relatives in the attempt to be the first family member to shout "Christmas Eve Gift".

Yeah, there must be some tradition...my Dad, who is now 83, has said it to us all our lives. In fact, that's why I decided to google it -- I've never heard anyone else say it and wondered if it was just him. Now, I need to investigate further.
